United Way and the Free Tax Prep program’s work to improve local financial stability are featured all month on WYPL TV 18 and the Memphis Makers program. Memphis Makers is featured numerous times each week through the month of January. A listing of broadcast times is included at the end of this article.
Memphis Makers highlights local organizations and programs making our community an even better place to live and work. During the January program, United Way staff are interviewed by host Ally Luciano on the importance of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites. The conversation covers how free tax preparation and filing brings millions of dollars into the hands of people and families with low-to-moderate incomes, strengthening our Mid-South economy.
Luciano and United Way Communications V.P. Dave Skorupa also discuss the dangers of letting predatory organizations prepare one’s taxes, talking about how “No Scam Zones” at all Free Tax Prep sites help Mid-Southerners avoid becoming victims of fraudulent tax organizations.
To find the Free Tax Prep site in your area or if you have questions about the program, call the 2-1-1 information line (a partnership between the Memphis Public Library system and United Way) and speak with an operator Monday through Friday during normal business hours.
