United Way of the Mid-South leads the community in organizing volunteers to impact non-profits and support their missions.

Did you know that the Memphis metro area is home to over 1,000 nonprofit organizations? According to CauseIQ, over 400 Mid-South nonprofits are 100% volunteer-run.

“Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.”

Booker T. Washington

Every hour of volunteering is an hour that the community gains back in real dollars. Those dollars can then be spent in other ways to serve and improve our community.  Although volunteering is widely recognized as helping others, research shows that volunteers themselves can benefit from lending a helping hand.

Here are some benefits of volunteering:

  1. Reduces stress
  2. Relieves anxiety and depression
  3. Provides a sense of purpose
  4. Fosters social connections
  5. Builds self-esteem and confidence

“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.”

Barack Obama

Volunteerism not only saves resources for the community, it brings us together in health and happiness. So how can you become an active altruist in your area? We’ve got just the thing for you…

You’re invited to join United Way of the Mid-South on September 16th for Day of Caring! Day of Caring is the community’s largest volunteer-driven service opportunity and our most impactful week of the year! Each year, we equip more than 1,000 volunteers to dig in and get their hands dirty, benefiting over 50 nonprofits with projects all across the Mid-South.
