Today is the first official day of Summer, and Youth United Way Leadership Program students spent part of their seasonal break as volunteers at the Emergency Management Center at 2668 Avery Avenue last week.
The teens answered calls from local senior citizens who were in need of air conditioners. This work was part of the “Beat The Heat” project, which helps senior citizens decrease the risk of suffering from heat-related illnesses.
The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department monitors health trends in the Mid-South, including heat-related illnesses. These illnesses could cause death, and everyone especially seniors – should be aware of danger signs and symptoms. Even if you are not at risk for heat-related illness, be sure to help our community by checking on neighbors and co-workers who may be exposed to the summer heat.
When the heat index reaches 100 degrees or higher the risk of heat illness greatly increases. Please see the attached document for information about how you can protect yourself from the heat.
