Stories: Homebuyer education makes more American dreams possible

Sometimes, our success stories are all about the bad things that don’t happen to people because you choose to support United Way.

Like many people in our community, Harold knew he wanted his own home. He knew very little about banking, down payments, interest rates and the financial responsibilities of home ownership. So before he committed himself to a lengthy mortgage arrangement, he invested some time in homebuyer education classes with United Housing, part of United Way of the Mid-South’s network of care.

Thanks to the information he received at the classes, Harold avoided signing up for a bad loan. He didn’t get involved with predatory lenders and illegal interest rates. He made sure his loan was within his ability to make monthly payments instead of obtaining the largest loan available.

As a result of making wise decisions, he has been able to avoid becoming another of our region’s foreclosure stories. Instead, he is living a vital part of the American dream – building equity in his own home. Your support of United Way helped make that happen.

“Now I know I am capable of making good investment decisions,” he said.

Thanks to your support of United Way, more and more people are getting the information they need to make wise investment decisions when pursuing their American dreams. Thank you.
