Worth repeating: Did you know? Elvis supported the United Way of the Mid-South network

Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley’s generosity to Memphis-area charities is well known in the Mid-South area.

(As “Elvis Week” draws to a close in the Memphis area this weekend, we are happy to re-post this story on the United Way News Center.)

Back in the 1960s, Elvis Presley generously supported our United Way network with gifts to nonprofit partners that provided programming to help infants and children including the Cynthia Milk Fund.

Presley’s gifts were made back when our United Way went by an earlier name, Shelby United Neighbors, or “SUN” for short.

Presley died 35 years ago this week. While there are many stories the city tells about its favorite son, most of them include some aspect of his charity and generosity. Elvis made charitable gifts without large amounts of media hype and publicity, and often in total anonymity, making it impossible to know the extent of his generosity. We thank Elvis Presley for his spirit of giving, as well as everyone who contributes to our network of care.
