Volunteers needed: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program

Volunteer Now!The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is looking for volunteers to serve as tax preparers this tax season, which is right around the corner!

Every year, hundreds of people contribute time and expertise to provide FREE tax preparation to thousands of individuals and families across the Mid-South. By providing free tax help, people can avoid predatory lenders using tax preparation to offer “quick cash” at high interest rates, diminishing the size of the tax refund people will receive.

VITA volunteers are part of the Earned Income Tax Credit Alliance, a partnership United Way enjoys with numerous nonprofits, businessses, faith-based groups and other organizations across the Mid-South.

There are many reasons to volunteer. People can share their skills, have an impact on the community, make new friends, help someone less fortunate and have fun while improving our community!

Volunteers serving in this program help people who qualify for vital tax credits and refunds. These credits and refunds can be the difference between greater financial stability and poverty.  For many people in our area, a sizable tax refund means an increased standard of living and the first steps in paying off bills, disolving debts or perhaps even having a down payment for a house!

Volunteers receive free training classes, free IRS-tax preparer certification and a wonderful sense of joy from giving to others. If you’re interested, call 901-433-4333 or send an email to janet.haas@uwmidsouth.org
