VITA and EITCA volunteers training to help people with amended tax returns due to tornado, winds, floods

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) workers are receiving training so they can better serve people who are impacted by recent tornadoes, windstorms and flooding in the Mid-South.

EITCA and VITA volunteers are receiving emergency and disaster training at United Way

EITCA and VITA volunteers will be receiving special training to assist people with changes to returns as a result of emergency and disaster conditions

Volunteers will receive additional training so they can be up-to-date on important tax-related information and referral assistance for filing “change of address” data with the Internal Revenue Service, and more importantly, filing amended tax returns to reflect disaster/casualty loss claims.

“Our goal is to assist people in getting tax relief now. Of course tax returns can be filed through October and we will be assisting by helping people file amended returns so they may get relief for their current losses,” said Nidia Logan, Manager of United Way of the Mid-South’s Community Impact Department.

“We provided this service last fall at the Millington shelter that was created after that flooding incident. The VITA team served over 300 people and filed over 100 casualty loss claims for victims of the flood,” Logan said.

Our local VITA team has ordered disaster kits from the IRS and hopes to offer disaster tax assistance at shelters and other public places.
