United Way Free Tax Prep needs volunteers!

This information announcement appeared in Sunday’s edition of The Commercial Appeal.

United Way’s Free Tax Prep program is recruiting volunteers to help people in households with less than $54,000 in annual income prepare and file federal income tax returns free of charge in 2017.

Volunteers can train to become IRS certified income tax preparers, United Way Cash Coaches, Free Tax Prep site greeters, and other important roles that help the program. Training is free and available in many different locations.

United Way Free Tax Prep is an important part of our “Driving the Dream” initiative to move more people out of poverty and into greater financial self-sufficiency. In 2016, over 8,000 people were helped, and more than $12 million in tax refunds were processed by the program.Free Tax Prep sites across the Mid-South help people avoid predatory lenders and connect with their federal tax refunds free of charge.

Free Tax Prep sites across the Mid-South help people avoid predatory lenders and connect with their federal tax refunds – free of charge. This means all of a filer’s money comes to them with no extra expenses whatsoever. Electronic filing is implemented to speed up the entire process.

United Way Free Tax Prep sites will open in January 2017. More details will be shared at uwmidsouth.org as they become available. Contact Yvonne.Howard@uwmidsouth.org for more information about volunteering today.
