Earlier this week, Volunteer Mid-South held its 36th Spirit of Giving Awards luncheon and United Way President Bryce Haugsdahl provided opening remarks about the importance of volunteerism in our organization’s work to help improve our community.

Volunteer Mid-South, a United Way network partner agency, holds the annual luncheon to recognize local volunteers that help make the the Mid-South an even greater place to live and work.

Harvey Middleton with SRVS walks to the podium during a standing ovation to accept his award.

“Our United Way fundraising drives raise gifts from people across our community, thanks to volunteers who run campaigns at workplaces across the region,” Haugsdahl said.

“When we distribute those millions to nonprofit programs and services, it’s because volunteers have done the work of reviewing agencies. Volunteers also make the tough decisions about which programs to fund, and with how much money. On behalf of United Way of the Mid-South, we salute the individuals and organizations recognized at today’s luncheon, and we wish to say ‘thank you’ for serving others as a volunteer.”

United Way of the Mid-South President Bryce Haugsdahl spoke about the critical role volunteers play in United Way's work.

Haugsdahl also described how local volunteers supply the ideas, energy and ingenuity that keep United Way’s network of care working for our region. Over the last year, United Way has put an even more deliberate focus on encouraging volunteers to serve as mentors and tutors for children.

Harvey Middleton with SRVS, another of United Way’s network partner agencies, was recognized with the Lenore S. Creson Board Member of the Year award. Delores Williams, a volunteer coordinator at United Way’s EITCA/VITA tax preparation site at the Hickory Ridge Mall, represented the Volunteer Income Tax Preparers who were nominated in the “Large Group Volunteer of the Year” category (Williams will be featured in a future volunteer spotlight story).
