Tax time is almost here, and United Way wants people to save more of their own money by using a FREE tax help site!
United Way works with organizations and volunteers across the Mid-South to provide free tax preparation help through the Earned Income Tax Credit Alliance (EITCA) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs.
The EITCA works to see more qualifying people utilize the Earned Income Tax Credit so more tax refund dollars will come to them, and in turn, to the Mid-South economy. Tax refunds can be used to pay bills, fix a vehicle to use for work transportation and in some cases, even be used as a down payment for a home.
A list of sites where Earned Income Tax Credit Alliance and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance workers help people file tax returns free of charge is available here (click to download a Microsoft Word document with sites sorted by zip codes).
Trained volunteers at free tax sites can file returns electronically, speeding up the process of receiving a refund. Please be sure to bring the W-2 form from your employer, identification and other tax-related documents to EITCA and VITA sites. January 31st is the national deadline for organizations to send W-2 forms to employees.
Locations of free tax help sites and hours of availability may change during the course of tax season as volunteers work to best address areas that show the greatest need for services. It is a very good idea to contact the 2-1-1 information line before traveling to a site to ensure it is able to serve you. Simply call the three digit number, 2-1-1, or call the backup line at 901.415.2790 and ask about free tax preparation sites in your area.
