Tax Day: EITCA & VITA sites open today, serving key roles during Financial Literacy Month

April(April 15) Most people know today is Tax Day across America – the deadline for filing your income tax information with the Internal Revenue Service.

United Way’s Earned Income Tax Credit Alliance (EITCA) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers are still working across the region today, helping people prepare and file their returns electronically for FREE at sites across the Mid-South.

Fewer people know that April has been designated as “National Financial Literacy Month” – a time when our country is reminded of the importance of understanding financial matters.

You may have read an article on the United Way News Center about how EITCA and VITA volunteers work to help local citizens receive all the tax credits they are entitled to, but you may know less about how the volunteers help people understand the credits and why they are receiving them. EITCA and VITA have worked to increase people’s knowledge about wise use of credit, savings, budgeting, banking and qualifying for available public benefits not just during April, but for the last several months.

While today is the official tax deadline, EITCA and VITA volunteers know people have need of free tax preparation and filing help even after April 15. (EITCA and VITA wish to remind you that while filing taxes late results in some penalties, it is still far better than not filing taxes at all.) Accordingly, the FREE tax preparation sites in the Hickory Ridge Mall and Southland Mall in Memphis will be open until Saturday, April 20.

If you need help finding an EITCA / VITA site today, call 2-1-1 (backup number 901.415.2790) for details during normal business hours.
