Most people know Tax Day across America is April 15– the deadline for filing your income tax information with the Internal Revenue Service. United Way’s Free Tax Prep sites with the Earned Income Tax Credit Alliance (EITCA) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers are still working across the region through Friday, April 18, helping people prepare and file their returns electronically for FREE across the Mid-South.
Our United Way News Center has posted many stories about how EITCA and VITA volunteers work to help local citizens receive all the tax credits they are entitled to, but you may know less about how volunteers are also educating, helping people understand the credits and why they are receiving them. EITCA and VITA also work to increase people’s knowledge about using credit wisely, building savings, budgeting, banking and qualifying for available public benefits as part of United Way’s priority focus on improving local financial stability.
While Tuesday, April 15 is the official tax deadline, EITCA and VITA volunteers know from past experience that people need free tax preparation and filing help even after that date. (EITCA and VITA wish to remind you that while filing taxes late results in some penalties, it is still far better than not filing taxes at all.) The FREE tax preparation sites in the Hickory Ridge Mall and Southland Mall in Memphis will be open until Friday, April 18.
