Need nonprofit help? Calling 2-1-1 is your best first step

When you need nonprofit help, calling 2-1-1 is your best first step.

When you need help from a local nonprofit agency in our region but you don’t know where to turn, your best course of action is to dial 2-1-1.

Recently, a 2-1-1 operator was faced with a situation that called for knowledge, compassion and information. The operator reports:

“Yesterday I got a call from a company out of our area which has employees in Memphis.  An employee had been killed in an accident and the person at the company wanted to know if I could give her referrals for grief counseling for some of the employees.  She also mentioned most of the employees spoke Spanish and referrals were located that met that criteria.”

Just as you dial 9-1-1 during a crisis like a house fire or medical emergency, dial 2-1-1 when you have a need for local nonprofit services and information. As seen in the example above, trained operators are able to ask for details related to needs and provide information about local nonprofits that can be of assistance.

2-1-1 is a partnership between United Way of the Mid-South and the Memphis Public Library System. You can also use the backup call number, 901.415.2790
