Grand opening of new Free tax preparation site in Hickory Ridge Mall (in cooperation with EITC Awareness Day)
Friday, January 28 is National EITC Awareness Day across the nation. United Way of the Mid-South’s Earned Income Tax Credit Alliance (EITCA) is observing the day with the grand opening of a new free tax preparation help site at Hickory Ridge Mall this Friday beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) workers at the Hickory Ridge Mall tax preparation site will help individual/families earning $48,362 or less prepare their taxes for free as well as benefit from the Earned Income Tax Credit without paying usurious high interest rates. The EITC is a potentially life-changing tax credit that can substantially increase a qualifying family or person’s tax refund. EITCA and VITA workers helped Mid-Southerners recover over $9 million in local tax refunds last year, making a huge economic impact on our community. $3 million came through Earned Income Tax Credits.
“There are plenty of places that will prepare your taxes, then offer you a quick refund loan at an illegal interest rate. That means they get more of your money, and you get less than you deserve. When you qualify at EITCA and VITA sites, you get all your money, and your taxes are prepared for free by trained volunteers,” said Dave Skorupa, United Way of the Mid-South’s vice president of communications.
This year’s event is particularly important in today’s economy – more workers may qualify due to reduced incomes. EITC can help make meeting expenses a little easier. The credit can increase a person’s federal income tax refunds from $2 to more than $5,666, depending on individual circumstances. To get an EITC, taxpayers must know about the credit, then file and specifically claim it.
Memphis Area Legal Services will also sponsor a “Surviving Tax Time” presentation during the celebration, beginning at 1 p.m. The informative presentation will be on the legal “dos and don’ts” of buying a used car at tax time.
Other tax sites are opening around the Mid-South. To learn about a tax site in your area and the documents you need to bring to receive free help, call 2-1-1 (backup number 901.415.2790).
