Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day celebrated with guest-filled Hickory Towne Center kick-off Friday!
Mid-South leaders will officially kick off Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day with a host of guests including Congressman Steve Cohen, City of Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, Shelby County Trustee David Lenoir and United Way President Bryce Haugsdahl. The kickoff will be tomorrow (Friday) at Hickory Ridge Towne Center (formerly known as the Hickory Ridge Mall) beginning at 1:00 p.m. Signs will be placed throughout the mall to show citizens where to go.
This event will also mark the opening of 15 tax prep sites throughout Shelby, Fayette, Lauderdale and Tipton counties in Tennessee, DeSoto, Tunica and Tate counties in Mississippi and Crittenden County in Arkansas.
United Way of the Mid-South, in partnership with Congressman Cohen, Mayor Wharton and Trustee Lenoir, is raising public knowledge about how important the federal Earned Income Tax Credit is to citizens in our community.
The Earned Income Tax Credit is a fully refundable federal tax credit available to many people earning $52,000 or less. Last year, Memphis and Shelby County taxpayers that were eligible for the EITC were not able to take advantage of the $70 million in potential tax refunds because they did not know about it. This year, awareness of the EITC is becoming even bigger.
“The Earned Income Tax Credit is a huge part of United Way’s work to improve financial stability in our community,” Haugsdahl said. “With the kickoff today, we want to show the citizens of our great community that they can put more money back in their pockets when they come to one of our free tax sites.”
In addition to the 15 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites that are opening, there is also a mobile tax filing service, that is operated by volunteers through United Way. Most of the sites will be open from January 30 through mid-April. (Please see below for a link to exact dates and times.)
