Last days for FREE tax preparation help – filers encouraged to act now!

There are less than two weeks left for eligible tax filers to take advantage of FREE tax preparation services across our area!

Free tax preparation services will be offered by United Way of the Mid-South’s partnerships with Earned Income Credit Alliance (EITCA) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) through April 18th.

Making sure eligible families claim the Earned Income Tax Credit is important for our community! Each year, one in four eligible families fail to claim his valuable credit.  This program is and important part of United Way’s financial stability initiative. To find the nearest tax site, download this list of EITCA & VITA sites: 2011 VITA SITES

When you come to your neighborhood’s site, remember to bring all your tax documents, identification, Social Security cards (for yourself and each of your dependents), and banking information. Volunteers will help you prepare and file your tax returns for free.

As of March 25, the The Internal Revenue Service reports there are still approximately 60 million taxpayers yet to file returns! It is estimated that 20 to 25 percent of all taxpayers will file in the final two weeks of tax season.

EITCA and VITA volunteers are certified in tax filing for the 2010 tax year, as well as year 2009, Schedule A, Balance Due and State Returns (when filing Federal returns). When citizens bring their bank account information, refunds can be direct deposited in 10 to 14 days. Low to moderate tax filers earning less than $50,000 are encouraged to take advantage of this service and save their money.
