United Way of the Mid-South (UWMS) continues its journey of transformation, which includes elevation of the role of Community Impact in the execution of our mission, and a renewed focus on our impact agenda our relationship with our community-based partnering agencies. Indeed, a central part of this work is in ensuring high impact investments in the community, and in utilizing and optimizing its unique leadership position in the human services sector to drive positive community outcomes; particularly in the area of poverty reduction.

To this end, UWMS seeks an experienced and dynamic individual to serve as the leader of the Community Impact department and provide leadership to the community through assessments, investments, mobilization and measurement of our goals that advance our United Way mission. This leader will also provide guidance and oversight to UWMS’ primary strategic initiative, Driving the Dream (DTD), which is committed to fostering the development of a more connected and integrated network of agencies to address poverty in the Mid-South.  To do this, DTD is creating, facilitating, and monitoring an accountable system of care, comprised of agencies whose staff are trained in a client-centered model, which utilizes a multi-domain assessment tool and is undergirded by a shared data platform. This framework is a collaboration across a wide array of programs and services, with the goal of improving the effectiveness of service delivery by seamlessly, intentionally, and efficiently moving individuals and their families toward economic self-sufficiency and other life goals which they, the clients, identify.


Responsible for directing all operations of the development, planning, funding/resource investment, community partnership and programs of the Community Impact Team. Leads/manages the related community/volunteer efforts and develops/maintains effective working relationships with community partners. Serves as subject matter expert in execution and administration of – and consultation on – UWMS’ Community Impact Agenda.


  • 30% Strategically aligns Community Impact staff, volunteers, programs, funding investments, and community partnerships with the Community Impact strategic goals. Ensures that related programs, grants and activities are incorporated with the total efforts of the organization as expressed in our vision, mission, and annual priority outcomes. Closely collaborates with senior leadership across the organization to integrate Community Impact with other key organizational priorities. Ensures non-campaign revenue secured for proactive Community Impact agenda.
  • 25% Manages all staff assigned to these areas of responsibility, with direct management responsibility for a high-performing team of three (3) Directors, overseeing categorically: a) Agency Grants and External Relations, b) Financial Stability and Empowerment, and c) the Driving The Dream Initiative and Network.  Prepares and implements measurable annual work plans to achieve the objectives.  Identifies, advises and counsels staff regarding developmental needs in line with corporate goals and policies.
  • 25% Develops and secures solid and fruitful working relationships between UWMS  organization and other partners in the community seeking to achieve similar goals and objectives.
  • 15% Oversees annual agency investment and audit processes with UWMS Board and ensures grant reporting from non-campaign revenue sources is effectively managed.
  • 5% Directs/collaborates with volunteer staff in performing Community Impact work. Respects volunteers for their contributions and incorporates their work with the rest of the team


  • Master’s Degree in Business, Social Work, Social Planning, Public Administration or similar preferred, plus 10+ years of direct related experience.  United Way leadership experience a plus.
  • Five years of direct experience in at least three of the following areas: Planning, Resource Development, Investment Distributions, Communications or Finance.
  • Six to eight years of experience supervising professional staff members. Management experience in a human service organization is highly desirable.
  • Senior-level leadership experience with documented accomplishments.
  • Demonstrated successful track record in building programs and teams leading to successful results.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the field and a passion for serving under-served and under-resourced individuals, families and/or communities; particularly people living in poverty.
  • Commitment and experience promoting a results-oriented approach to human services program design and implementation.
  • Desire to serve as an integral leader at an established community institution in the midst of a unique period of change and transition.
  • Not just tolerance for, but enjoyment of, working with a degree of ambiguity during this entrepreneurial period of transformation and ability to help others successfully move through this change.
  • Respected leader in human services and/or grantmaking field, with sufficient gravitas and demonstrated credibility within the sector; or a demonstrated ability to cultivate such a reputation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communications.
