A volunteer fair featuring staff and volunteers from United Way and tax consultants from SPEC (Stakeholder, Partnership, Education & Communications) provided information to visitors at the Hickory Ridge Mall late last month. The group worked to recruit new people to serve our community as VITA  (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) volunteers.

Representatives from the Internal Revenue Service joined the group and provided an information-packed session for the experienced VITA volunteers on hand.

VITA volunteers and free tax site coordinators told their personal stories of how serving our community has impacted their lives. Potential volunteers had an opportunity to see materials and ask questions about training and/or obtaining a tax law certification.

Computers loaded with Tax Wise software were available so potential volunteers could experience the electronic filing process first-hand. Some used the opportunity to input a “dummy” tax return. Participants also learned about SPEC outreach initiatives.
