Fast E-filing makes quick work of tax preparation and refunds for EITCA/VITA sites this year

FREE tax preparation sites across the Mid-South

Helping people file taxes for FREE with e-filing means larger refunds, fast, increasing the potential for financial stability

(Here is a file with a listing of FREE tax preparation sites in the Mid-South area) 2011 VITA SITES

As the Internal Revenue Service opens its 21st season of electronic filing, taxpayers are encouraged to E-file to get faster refunds and ensure accurate tax return processing.

At United Way’s Earned Income Tax Credit Alliance and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites across the region, volunteers are providing FREE tax preparation help to ensure that qualifying people benefit from the Earned Income Tax Credit and the speed of E-filing.

E-filing allows tax information to be sent electronically, speeding up the time it takes to receive a refund, sometimes reducing the wait time to only 7-10 days. However, if a taxpayer at an EITCA/VITA site requests their return to be prepared on paper and chooses to have it mailed, that service is also provided.

According to IRS Commissioner Doug Schuman, IRS E-file is now the norm rather than the exception. EITCA/VITA volunteers are trained in e-filing and are ready to use this tool to speed up local returns and refunds!

The Earned Income Tax Credit Alliance (EITCA) is an initiative of United Way of the Mid-South in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, AARP, Department of Human Services, Memphis City and County Governments, the 2-1-1 Information System and other business and nonprofit agencies.

Tax Filers should bring proof of identity (picture ID), all W-2, 1098 or 1099 forms, Social Security or Tax ID number (ITIN) card for all individuals listed on return, and a voided bank check or savings deposit slip for direct deposit to receive refunds in 7–10 days. If filing joint returns, both spouses must be present.

Filers are encouraged to dial 2-1-1, Tennessee’s community services referral help line, to find locations for free tax preparation sites and their hours. (The backup telephone number for the 2-1-1 help line is 901-415-2790).
