Earlier this year (before the launch of the News Center)

Before the launch of the News Center in November, there was plenty of activity around the United Way office. Here are just some of the significant events from earlier in this year:

2010 UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN KICKOFF with DAY OF CARING, SEPTEMBER 17 (see video)
We kicked-off United Way’s regional fundraising campaign with a day devoted to volunteerism and community service. Roughly 1400 people volunteered at numerous nonprofit organizations to provide labor and expertise on a wide variety of projects benefitting our community. UNITED WAY FOUR-PERSON GOLF SCRAMBLE AT THE LINKS AT COTTONWOODS at HARRAH’S in TUNICA, MS, AUGUST 30
Golfers across the Mid-South enjoyed a round of golf during our 21st Annual Golf Scramble for great flight prizes and a chance at winning a new BMW in the hole-in-one tournament.

EMPLOYEE CAMPAIGN LEADERS TRAINING at the PEABODY HOTEL, AUGUST 20
Key United Way volunteers were given “best practices” for successful fundraising campaign strategies at a special training session at The Peabody. Campaign Leader’s Training provides the skills and effective tools to run a successful campaign and to analyze past campaign performance.

NOT-FOR-PROFIT LEADERSHIP SUMMIT (PHASE II) DEVELOPING A BLUEPRINT FOR GRADUATION SUCCESS with GUEST SPEAKER MR. DENNIS BEGA, MAY 21
Mr. Dennis Bega, Senior Education Advisor for the United States Department of Education, was the guest speaker for this summit bringing not-for-profit leaders together to address graduation rates in the Mid-South. Best practice models of not-for-profits and school collaboration were presented. The event was held at Memphis Jewish Community Center, 6560 Poplar Avenue in Memphis, TN as part of our partnership with Volunteer Tennessee and America’s Promise Alliance.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS CONFERENCE, APRIL 27
Participants from media, academia and nonprofits learned how a radio station in Haiti became an emergency and disaster relief operation overnight after the terrible earthquake at this conference…>MORE HERE

NEW WONDER TRAIL INSTALLATION WORK IN HERNANDO, MS, APRIL 17

A new United Way “Wonder Trail” was installed at Lee’s Summit Park on April 17th to help parents and their young children engage in fun early learning opportunities together. This United Way Wonder Trail project was made possible thanks to the support of the City of Hernando, Wal-Mart of Hernando and Home Depot of Horn Lake. Labor to install the Wonder Trailwas provided by Girl Scouts Heart of the South troops from the Hernado, MS area and United Way of the Mid-South. …>SEE PHOTOS HERE

EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT ALLIANCE (2009 tax year)
United Way volunteers and the Earned Income Tax Credit Alliance worked through April 15 to once again drive in millions of dollars in tax credits and tax refunds for our Mid-South area by offering FREE tax help at several Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites across the Mid-South! Contact the dial 2-1-1 service, or call 901.415.2790 and ask about the free tax sites that will be in your area in 2010-11.
