Haiti radio personality Carel Pedre will be in Memphis to discuss media’s role in time of disaster with local news & emergency response leaders during a disaster preparedness conference convened by United Way of the Mid-South.
(MEMPHIS, TN) Carel Pedre, General Manager of Radio One from Port-au-Prince, Haiti will speak about media’s role in times of crisis and disaster at a Disaster Preparedness Conference on Tuesday, April 27 at the University Center at the University of Memphis.
Pedre, a well-known radio personality in Haiti, will share how he and his network aided hundreds of Haitians in their attempts to get to safety and medical help after the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake which killed an estimated 200,000 people and left over 1.5 million homeless. After the quake, Pedre’s network only had enough fuel to run an electricity generator a few hours each day. Pedre used the available air time to transform his station from an entertainment venue into one of the last lifelines for lonely and desperate survivors with still-working battery-powered radios.
In addition to Pedre’s featured speech, the conference also features remarks from local disaster relief organization leaders such as the:
Memphis/Shelby County Emergency Management Agency
The American Red Cross
The Mid-South Association of Contingency Planners
Bryce Haugsdahl, President of United Way of the Mid-South, will speak about the United Way Worldwide organization’s role in providing emergency and disaster relief for the Haitian earthquake survivors.
Leaders from the Center for Earthquake Research and Information and the FedEx Center for Multi-Media Arts will also present remarks on behalf of the University of Memphis.
Media moderators Dewayne Benton of Clear Channel Radio Memphis and Stephanie Scurlock of WREG Channel 3 will help introduce speakers and moderate a question-and-answer session with Mr. Pedre at the conclusion of the conference. Lee Meredith, General Manager WMC-TV Channel 5, and Michael Oppenheimer, General Manager Clear Channel Radio-Memphis are honorary chairmen for this event.
The conference is convened by United Wayof the Mid-South to promote emergency and disaster preparedness for our community. The conference is underwritten by financial and in-kind support by other sponsors including FedEx, Lab Four, MLGW, The University of Memphis, The Peabody, Metropolitan Memphis Hotel & Lodging Association, and ACP.
