United Way of the Mid-South announces $26 million raised for the Mid-South with a great "deal" of enthusiasm
United Way of the Mid-South celebrated the conclusion of its campaign year on Thursday, March 1st, when the campaign total raised for the community was unveiled.
Bill Logue, Executive Vice President, Operations and Systems Support for FedEx Express and General Campaign Chairman for United Way of the Mid South’s fundraising effort announced that the organization has raised $26,021,619!
The annual meeting/campaign celebration was held at The Peabody Hotel on March 1, 2007.
Logue announced the top 25 charitable accounts through a tribute/parody of the popular NBC game show Deal or No Deal. Using quality computer graphics and a less-than-quality bald headpiece atop the head of a United Way Vice President to represent Howie Mandel, the TV show's host, the crowd urged Logue to continually reject lower dollar offers from "the banker" until he opened the suitcase which revealed the Mid-South’s $26 Million contribution.
Immediately after the $26 Million was announced, Logue was presented with a United Way trophy and a large framed and autographed poster from Howie Mandel, host of the real Deal or No Deal game show. The poster was obtained through NBC in cooperation with local affiliate WMC TV5 and was presented by anchorman Joe Birch, who is also a long-time United Way volunteer.
In addition to Logue, long-time United Way Board Member Herman Morris Jr., and Fox 13 TV's Mearl Purvis also paid tribute to organizations that gave to United Way. Purvis is also a former member of the United Way Board of Directors, and was presented with a plaque in thanks for her help with this year's United Way fundraising campaign video.
United Way’s G. Bradley Wanzer Jr. Award For Excellence was presented to BRIDGES. The award recognizes United Way nonprofit agencies that display the highest standards of accountability, partnership, collaboration and outcome measures.
The meeting also featured the retirements and beginnings of terms for some United Way Board members who were saluted by the Immediate Past Chairman of the Board T. Michael Glenn, Executive Vice President, Market Development and Corporate Communications, from FedEx.
Invocation was delivered by Rev. Marilynn Robinson, co-pastor of St. Andrew AME Church. Robinson is an active United Way volunteer at St.FrancisHospital. Capt. Matt Straughan, CO NSA Mid-South delivered the Pledge of Allegiance. Straughan was an integral part of the Combined Federal Campaign for charity last year. Ron Belz, President of Belz Enterprises and chairman of the United Way Board of Directors hosted the event.
