A single mother of six gets the skills to find a well-paying job

A single mother with six children came to a United Way funded program to learn a career so that she could take care of her family and be a self-sufficient head of the household.

She decided to enroll in the Cable and Alarm Installation Technician classes available at the program and successfully completed the course with distinction.

She was readily employed by a contractor on the FedExForum arena project and earned a wage of $14.00 per hour. United Way funding and federal pass-through funds allowed the United Way program at the YWCA to take this mother of six from a limited public assistance award to financial self sufficiency as a taxpayer, contributing to the economy of Memphis.

She has continued to work with the FedExForum contractor on other projects and has also worked on other construction projects with other contractors.

Your gifts to United Way of the Mid-South help many people find meaningful employment and become taxpaying members of society. On behalf of everyone helped by a program focused on self-sufficiency, thank you for supporting United Way of the Mid-South.
